I love the analogy of the great pair of shoes and the best advisory relationship. You're right on.

What a great and simple concept. I sit in meetings with husband and wife clients often and watch the wife's attention eventually get lost. My co-workers are all male and consistentenly play to the man in the house. I have told my bosses on many occassions that I would like to take the wife out for lunch, while the guys talk business. Of course we would also be talking business, but in a way that would capture the wife's attention and interest. I also agree that many women after their spouse dies are overwhelmed with all the responsibilities now having to be overseen by themselves. Making important decisions without the spouse that always took care of it himself. Woman do themselves an injustice, when they allow that to happen. Of course, this does play into the generational aspects. Younger women seem to be more interested in learning more now, and not waiting till their husbands pass to become interested in their future. I just happened on your website today and have already added it to my favorites. I have also sent your link on to other family members. Thanks for telling it straight. Maybe one day the guys will get it.

As in all "talks", everyone is a little nervous and giddy about broaching the subject.
But as Eleanor mentions, better to be uncomfortable NOW vs. not having any direction for how matters should be handled due to unknown wishes!

Dear Roberta,

Your blog is so insightful! I will be thinking about what you wrote for myself and to share with others~"I am enough!" Thank you for taking the time to delve into this most important woman-centered issue. It is one that many of us share.

Warm regards,
Bonnie

Great post - I'd agree women are both my best/favorite clients and the most exasperating (often at the prospect stage). I really appreciate the paragraph on value. There seem to be some women who believe they are not worth any earning amount and transfer that to women professionals. There is also the woman personality that believes you should always donate your work. The irony is that we can move a woman so much further ahead financially once they engage in moving themselves forward with confidence.

Divorcing women often feel particularly beat up, reluctant to spend on good guidance. There is a highly successful woman business owner friend who has the bulk of her money with a gentleman at a well known brokerage and gets little to no service (in the recent downturn, he never called and when she called him, he said "I'm on vacation, can YOU call ME next week?")- she's a multi-millionaire. For all her success, she's bought into "there must be a secret, and "I gotta guy" who's going to show it to me". . . exasperating!
