As Dr. Gresham discusses in detail, there are four ways that women may connect with money, and it is important for financial planners to recognize which level is primary for their women clients or prospects, and to start the advisory engagement there. As the relationship goes forward, and trust is built, the advisor then needs to explore the other possible connections with the female client. A healthy, confident relationship with money is achieved when a woman client can relate to her money on all four levels.

Dr. Gresham also shares a simple client feedback questionnaire that is becoming a best practice in the counseling profession, to gauge a client’s sense of having been fully and uncritically heard by her advisor. Too often an advisor may believe that a meeting with a client went well, while the client herself had a very different assessment. Using this questionnaire can help financial advisors get the engagement off to the right start, well before there is potential for real dissatisfaction.
